EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Jean Marie Roland, Vicomte de la Platriere, a prominent Girondist and revolutionary figure during the French Revolution. The image is taken from the esteemed collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. Born in 1752, Roland was a French aristocrat who became a key player in the political landscape of the late 18th century. He was a member of the National Assembly and served as Minister of the Interior under the Girondin government. Roland was a strong advocate for the rights of the common people and played a crucial role in the fall of the Bastille in 1789. The lithograph captures Roland in the height of his political power, dressed in the formal attire of a Vicomte. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and resolve. The intricate details of his costume, from the rich fabric of his coat to the ornate design of his hat, are beautifully rendered in handcolour. Roland's political career came to an end in 1793 when he was arrested and executed during the Reign of Terror. Despite his tragic end, his legacy as a champion of the people and a key figure in the French Revolution endures. This image serves as a reminder of the complex and tumultuous history of France during this period and the remarkable individuals who shaped its course.
