EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Jean Sylvain Bailly, a prominent figure in the French Enlightenment, dressed in the attire of a deputy to the Estates-General in 1789. Bailly (1736-1793) was a renowned astronomer, mathematician, freemason, and revolutionary whose contributions to science and politics left a lasting impact on French history. Born in Paris, Bailly studied mathematics and astronomy under the tutelage of Jean-Philippe de Cheseaux. He later became the director of the Paris Observatory and made significant discoveries in astronomy, including the observation of the transit of Venus in 1761. Bailly's political career began in 1780 when he was elected to the Paris Municipal Council. In 1784, he was appointed as the Mayor of Paris, a position he held until the French Revolution. During this time, he advocated for the rights of the people and worked to improve the living conditions of Parisians. In 1789, Bailly was elected as a deputy to the Estates-General, the assembly that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. He played a key role in the early stages of the Revolution, advocating for the establishment of a constitutional monarchy and the protection of individual rights. Despite his revolutionary fervor, Bailly's political beliefs evolved over time, and he was eventually arrested and executed during the Reign of Terror in 1793. This lithograph, taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," captures Bailly in a moment of political transformation, dressed in the formal attire of a deputy to the Estates-General, a testament to his complex and multifaceted role in French history.
