EDITORS COMMENTS
Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, also known as Madame de Pompadour, was a prominent figure in the French court during the reign of King Louis XIV. Born in Paris in 1721, she rose to prominence through her intelligence, beauty, and wit, eventually becoming the king's mistress in 1745. This handcoloured lithograph, created in 1852 by Paul Lacroix for his publication "Costumes Historiques de la France," provides a striking depiction of Madame de Pompadour in her prime. The image captures the elegance and sophistication of the Marquise de Pompadour, with her voluminous hairstyle, intricately embroidered robe, and delicate lace collar. Her piercing gaze and confident posture convey a sense of power and allure, reflecting her influence over the king and the court. Madame de Pompadour was not only a mistress, but also an advisor and confidante to Louis XIV. She is credited with introducing Chinese art and porcelain to France, and her patronage of the arts helped to shape the cultural landscape of the time. Her influence extended beyond the court, as she was also a prolific writer and translator, publishing works on a variety of subjects. Despite her many accomplishments, Madame de Pompadour's legacy has been subject to some controversy. Some view her as a powerful and independent woman who used her wit and intelligence to navigate the complex world of the French court, while others see her as a mere plaything of the king. Regardless of one's perspective, there is no denying the impact that she had on French history and culture during her time at Versailles.
