EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Jequirity bean or Rosary pea, Abrus precatorius, a captivating and intriguing plant in the Fabaceae family. The illustration, drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), was published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The engraving was executed by Stanghi. The Jequirity bean, also known as the Chinese primrose, primulidium sinense, primula sinensis, or primavera della China, is a small, climbing plant native to tropical regions of Asia. Its distinctive, vibrant red seeds, resembling rosary beads, are the most notable feature of this plant. The seeds contain abrin, a potent toxin, making them poisonous if ingested. However, they have been used traditionally in various cultures for medicinal and ornamental purposes. Turpin's masterful illustration captures the plant's delicate beauty and intricacy, showcasing the tendrils, leaves, and seeds in stunning detail. The use of hand-coloring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a captivating addition to any botanical collection. This illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of Turpin and Jussieu, who dedicated their lives to documenting the natural world.
