EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored lithograph depicts Dysphania ambrosioides, also known as Jesuits' tea, wormseed, or Jerusalem oak. The botanical illustration was meticulously created by David Blair and later lithographed by Hanhart for the publication "Medicinal Plants" by Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen in London, 1880. Dysphania ambrosioides is an herbaceous plant native to tropical regions of the Americas. Its leaves and seeds have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, particularly for their anthelmintic properties. The plant was given the name "Jesuits' tea" due to its historical use by the Jesuit missionaries in South America, who utilized it to treat intestinal parasites and other ailments. The plant is shown here in great detail, with its slender stems, oval-shaped leaves, and small, greenish-yellow flowers. The seeds, which resemble tiny, brown beads, are also visible among the leaves. The intricate veining and delicate textures of the plant are beautifully captured in this botanical illustration, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the late 19th century. This print is a testament to the importance of botanical illustration in the development of herbal medicine and the advancement of scientific knowledge during this period. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of plant-based remedies and the continued relevance of natural medicines in modern healthcare.
