EDITORS COMMENTS
John Dory, Zeus faber, also known as the St. Peter's Fish or Doree, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving from Edward Donovan's Natural History of British Fishes. Published between 1802 and 1808 by Donovan and Rivington in London, this illustration showcases the intricate details of this unique and intriguing marine species. John Dory is a popular fish in the family Serranidae, known for its distinctive spotted pattern on its side, which resembles an eye. This pattern is thought to serve as a form of camouflage, helping the fish blend in with the sandy ocean floor and avoid predators. The John Dory is a highly migratory fish, found in both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is commonly caught by commercial and recreational fisheries. The illustration captures the fish's elongated body, which can grow up to 1.5 meters in length, and its large, round pectoral fins. The scales on its body are also visible, as well as its dorsal and anal fins. The background of the illustration is simple, with a plain white background, allowing the John Dory to take center stage. Edward Donovan was a renowned Irish naturalist, artist, and publisher who produced some of the most accurate and detailed illustrations of fish during his time. His Natural History of British Fishes was a groundbreaking work, featuring over 300 species of fish, and remains an important reference in the fields of ichthyology and zoology today. This beautiful hand-colored copperplate engraving is a testament to Donovan's skill and dedication to documenting the natural world.
