King Edward VIII at Calais Station: A Royal Vacation in 1930s Europe This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor (1894-1972), prepared to embark on a clandestine vacation in Europe during the summer of 1936. With the air of a man on a secret mission, the King, dressed in a casual yet elegant outfit, doffs his bowler hat as he boards the iconic Orient Express train at Calais Station. The King, who would abdicate the throne just a few months later due to his desire to marry Wallis Simpson, was traveling incognito under the title of the Duke of Lancaster. His destination was the Dalmatian coast of Yugoslavia, where he planned to join his yacht, the Nahlin, for a leisurely cruise. The year was 1936, and Europe was on the brink of turmoil. The 30s were a time of political and social upheaval, with the looming threat of war on the horizon. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, the King sought solace in the simple pleasures of a holiday by the sea. The Orient Express, a symbol of luxury and glamour, was the perfect choice for the King's clandestine journey. The train, which would later become famous for its association with Agatha Christie's novels, offered a sense of privacy and discretion that the King required. As he stepped onto the train, the King left behind the weight of his royal duties and the mounting pressures of his personal life. For a brief moment, he was just a man, eager to enjoy a well-deserved break from the public eye. The photograph captures this fleeting moment of escape, a reminder of a time when the monarch could still enjoy the simple pleasures of a European vacation.
