Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, Lebisey, Normandy

This Memorial to the 2nd Battalion marks the German front line 6 June to 9 July 1944 during the intense fighting for Caen. The KSLI liberated Breville-Beuville and attacked Lebisy on the afternoon of D-Day. However, the 185th Brigade, of which the Regiment was part, was planned to enter Caen on D Day but would not do so until 43 days later. Here the Union flag is upside down as it so often is, not deliberately but through confusion. This is similar to the confusion of spellings of French village names on British memorials. Date: 2009

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry (KSLI) Memorial at Lebisey, Normandy, commemorating the brave actions of the 2nd Battalion during the intense fighting for Caen from June to July 1944. The KSLI played a significant role in the liberation of the villages of Breville-Beuville and attacked Lebisy on the afternoon of D-Day, 6 June 1944. However, the 185th Brigade, to which the regiment belonged, was initially planned to enter Caen on D-Day itself but did not do so until 43 long days later. The Union flag atop the memorial is displayed upside down, a common occurrence in many British memorials in France, not due to any deliberate disrespect but rather through confusion. The spelling of French village names on British memorials often varies, adding to the complexity of ensuring the flags are displayed correctly. This image was taken in 2009, a reminder of the sacrifices made by the KSLI during the D-Day landings and the subsequent battles for Caen. The memorial stands as a testament to their courage and determination in the face of adversity.
