EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts a lady of the court during the reign of King Henri III of France (r. 1574-1589). The elegant dame, dressed in the height of 16th-century fashion, stands before an ornate backdrop of intricately designed gold and red damask. Her voluminous gown, adorned with lace and pearls, is accentuated by a matching farthingale and a delicate lace collar. Her long, flowing hair is styled in elaborate curls and adorned with a jeweled headdress. The lady's attire is reminiscent of the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the late Renaissance period. The intricate details of her costume, from the delicate lace to the rich damask fabric, reflect the wealth and sophistication of the nobility during this time. King Henri III, known for his love of the arts and his extravagant court, is believed to have been a patron of the arts and a lover of fashion. The lady in this print embodies the refined elegance and beauty that was prized at the French court during his reign. This lithograph is a reproduction of a portrait in the gallery portfolio of Roger de Gaignières, a prominent French antiquarian and collector. The original portrait was part of the Costumes Historiques de la France, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in 1852. The handcoloured lithograph adds an extra layer of detail and beauty to the already stunning original, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical costume or French art.
