EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts a London Fire Brigade (LFB) horse-drawn 50ft escape ladder from the late 1890s. These vital units, stationed at each fire station, were the fire service's quick response vehicles for rescues. Unlike modern fire trucks, they carried no firefighting equipment, but their importance cannot be overstated. The horse-drawn ladder, with its massive 50ft wheeled structure, could be swiftly extended up to a window for rescue operations. The crew, consisting of skilled firemen, would call out "Hi! Hi! Hi!" to clear the way through London's busy streets. The driver, shown here with his right hand on the brake lever, would expertly maneuver the horse-drawn vehicle during the thrilling dash to the fire scene. The 1890s were a pivotal time in London's firefighting history, with the city's fire service undergoing significant changes. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the horse-drawn escape ladder and its dedicated crew in action. The absence of warning devices made their journey through the city's traffic all the more challenging, adding to the urgency and excitement of their mission. This photograph, taken in 1890, is a testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of the firefighters during the Victorian era. The horse-drawn escape ladder was a crucial component of the London Fire Brigade's rescue efforts, and its legacy continues to inspire and captivate us today.
