EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by M. Griffith for Edward Griffith's seminal work "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1824, showcases three distinct species of Old World monkeys: the Lion-tailed Macaque (Macaca silenus), the Northern Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca leonina), and the Toque Macaque, also known as the Bonnet Macaque or Chinese Macaque (Macaca sinica). The Lion-tailed Macaque, depicted on the left, is an endangered primate native to the Western Ghats of India. With its distinctive lion-like mane and bright red face, this monkey is a true wonder of nature. The Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, shown in the middle, is a vulnerable species native to southern China and northern India. This macaque is easily identified by its long, bushy tail and white fur on its cheeks. The Toque Macaque, or Chinese Macaque, is also an endangered species, and is depicted on the right of the engraving. This macaque is named for the distinctive crest of hair on its head, which resembles a toque or bonnet. The Toque Macaque is native to China and is the only Old World monkey species that is naturally tri-colored, with red, white, and black fur. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving, created over 200 years ago, remains an important record of these fascinating primates and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these endangered and vulnerable species from extinction.
