EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is an 18th century depiction of Livonian or Liv people, indigenous inhabitants of Latvia and Estonia, as they travel in a horse-drawn wagon. The Livonians, also known as the Livs, are a Finno-Ugric people with a rich cultural heritage that predates the arrival of the Baltic Germans and Slavs. In this illustration, a Livonian man skillfully navigates his cart through the rugged terrain, with a woman passenger seated beside him. The scene is taken from Andrew Swinton's "Travels into Norway, Denmark and Russia," a firsthand account of Swinton's journey through Europe, published in 1792. The illustration is a copperplate engraving by Dell Acqua, hand-colored by Lazaretti, and is part of the "Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages" by Giovanni Battista Sonzogno, published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. This intriguing image offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Livonian people during a time when their culture was being threatened by the encroachment of outside influences. The Livonian language and traditions have largely survived to the present day, and efforts are being made to preserve and promote their unique heritage.
