EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Long-nosed Bandicoot, Perameles nasuta, also known as the Long-nosed Pouched-badger. Native to Australia, this marsupial is characterized by its elongated, sensitive snout, which it uses to forage for food in the leaf litter on the forest floor. The Long-nosed Bandicoot is a small, agile creature, with a body length of around 30 cm (12 inches) and a weight of up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs). It has a grayish-brown fur, short legs, and a long, bushy tail. The Long-nosed Bandicoot is a nocturnal animal and feeds on a variety of plant material, including roots, tubers, and fruits, as well as insects and other invertebrates. It is a solitary creature and has a complex mating system, with females mating with multiple males during their estrous cycle. After a gestation period of around 12 days, the female gives birth to a single, underdeveloped young, which crawls into its mother's pouch and continues to develop there for several months. This beautiful engraving is from Edward Griffith's The Animal Kingdom by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1825. The engraving was likely produced by Harriet or Edward Griffith, and the natural history text was written by the renowned French naturalist, Georges Cuvier. The intricacy and detail of the engraving are a testament to the skill of the engravers and the importance placed on accurate representation in natural history during this period.
