EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, Comte de Toulouse (1678-1737) Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, Comte de Toulouse, born on October 15, 1678, was an illegitimate son of King Louis XIV of France and Madame de Montespan. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph is a captivating representation of the Comte de Toulouse's regal persona, showcasing his elegance and refinement. The image, taken from the renowned "Costumes Historiques de la France" portfolio by Paul Lacroix, was originally a painting in Roger de Gaignières gallery. The meticulous attention to detail in the lithograph is evident in the intricate textures and patterns of the Comte's attire, which includes a richly decorated coat, a lace jabot, a plumed hat, and a sash adorned with the Bourbon family's fleur-de-lis emblem. Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon held various titles and positions throughout his life, including the Duke of Alençon, the Duke of Estissac, and the Duke of Montpensier. He was also a Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit and a Grand Master of the Order of Malta. Despite his illegitimate status, he was recognized as a significant figure in the French court and enjoyed the favor of his father, King Louis XIV. The Comte de Toulouse was known for his military prowess and was involved in several campaigns during the War of the Spanish Succession. He died on March 23, 1737, at the age of 58. This stunning lithograph serves as a testament to his noble lineage and the opulence of the French court during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
