EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Louis de la Tremoille, Comte de Joigny: A Nobleman in the Story of Esther and Mordecai" This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Louis de la Tremoille, Comte de Joigny (d. 1464), a prominent figure in the French nobility during the late Middle Ages. The image is based on a tapestry from Roger de Gaignières' portfolio VI 126, titled "Historical Costumes of France," published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852. Louis de la Tremoille is shown in the company of Esther and Mordecai, two biblical figures renowned for their courage and wisdom. Esther, the queen of Persia, saved her people, the Jews, from destruction by persuading her husband, King Ahasuerus, to revoke a decree ordering their annihilation. Mordecai, her cousin and guardian, had earlier thwarted a plot to assassinate the king. In this representation, Louis de la Tremoille is dressed in the elegant attire of a 15th-century French nobleman. His long, flowing tunic, adorned with intricate patterns, is secured by a belt and a sash. A fur-trimmed cloak draped over his shoulders adds an air of regality. The nobleman's head is crowned with a tall, conical hat, a common headpiece for the French aristocracy during this period. The tapestry-inspired lithograph masterfully captures the essence of the Middle Ages, transporting us back to a time of grandeur, chivalry, and intrigue. The presence of Louis de la Tremoille, a historical figure, adds an interesting layer to the biblical narrative, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the past and the present. This beautiful artwork is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of France and the enduring allure of its historical figures. It serves as a reminder of the significant role that tapestries and prints played in preserving and disseminating the visual narratives of the past.
