EDITORS COMMENTS
Louis de Laval, Seigneur de Chatillon: A Noble Governor of Paris in the Fifteenth Century This exquisite hand-colored lithograph depicts Louis de Laval, Seigneur de Chatillon, a prominent figure in the political landscape of fifteenth-century France. Born around 1382, he rose to become the governor of Paris under King Charles VI and later served as the royal chamberlain under King Charles VII. The image is derived from a manuscript miniature in Roger de Gaignières' portfolio VII 65, which is part of the extensive historical costumes collection, "Costumes Historiques de la France," published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. Louis de Laval is shown here in his regal attire, wearing a long, flowing robe adorned with fur trimmings and a velvet cap with a distinctive white feather. His expression is serious, reflecting the responsibilities he bore as the governor of Paris. The city was a significant cultural and political center during this period, and the role of its governor was crucial in maintaining order and ensuring the welfare of its inhabitants. The intricate details of the lithograph, from the delicate folds of the fabric to the meticulously rendered embroidery, offer a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French aristocracy during the late Middle Ages. The use of vibrant colors and shading techniques adds depth and texture to the image, making it a captivating representation of a pivotal figure in French history. Louis de Laval's tenure as governor of Paris was marked by several significant events, including the Siege of Paris in 1413, during which he successfully defended the city against the English forces. He continued to serve the French crown faithfully until his death in 1430. This lithograph serves as a testament to his noble legacy and the rich history of France during the late Middle Ages.
