Louis Philippe Joseph, Duc d'Orléans (1747-1793): A Regal Portrait from the Age of Enlightenment This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Louis Philippe Joseph, Duc d'Orléans (1747-1793), a prominent figure during the Age of Enlightenment in France. The Duke, who was the grandson of King Louis XV, is shown here in a formal attire, exuding an air of regal elegance and sophistication. The Duke's outfit consists of a richly decorated robe, adorned with intricate gold brocade and ermine trim. A white lace jabot, a fashionable accessory of the time, is visible at his neck, while a gold-embroidered waistcoat adds an extra layer of opulence. The Duke's hair is styled in the popular 'Fontainebleau' fashion, which featured long, curled locks. The portrait is taken from 'Costumes Historiques de la France' by Paul Lacroix, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852. The work was a significant contribution to the study of French historical costumes and was widely admired for its meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. Louis Philippe Joseph, Duc d'Orléans, was a key player in French politics during the late 18th century. He served as the Regent of France during the minority of King Louis XVI and was known for his efforts to modernize the French monarchy. Tragically, he was executed during the French Revolution in 1793, marking the end of the Bourbon monarchy in France. This beautiful lithograph not only offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the French nobility during the Age of Enlightenment but also serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous events that shaped French history.
