EDITORS COMMENTS
Louise of Savoy, Regent of France and Mother of King Francis I (1476-1532) is depicted in this stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante from the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres. Louise, also known as Louise of Savoy or Louise of France, was the eldest daughter of Duke Philip II of Savoy and Duchess Margaret of Austria. In 1498, she married Charles Orléans, Duke of Angoulême, who was the brother of King Louis XII of France. After Louis XII's death in 1515, Louise became regent for her young son, Francis I, who was only two years old at the time. In this portrait, Louise is shown wearing the regal attire of the French court. She dons a French hood and wimple, which were essential elements of the headdress for noblewomen during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The surtout, a long outer robe, is made of rich velvet brocade, adorned with intricate designs and patterns. The train of the surtout trails behind her, while the fur sleeves add an elegant touch to the outfit. A chain belt cinches her waist, emphasizing her slender figure. Louise's regency was marked by political instability, as the Dauphiné, a territory under Savoy control, was coveted by the powerful House of Bourbon. Despite these challenges, Louise managed to maintain peace and stability in France until her son came of age. This portrait captures the grace and poise of a strong and capable woman, who played a crucial role in French history as the mother and regent of a future king.
