EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" in 1845, showcases the elegant and powerful couple, Ludovico Sforza and Beatrice d'Este, surrounded by their children, Massimiliano and Francois. Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, was a prominent figure in Italian politics during the 15th century, known for his patronage of the arts and sciences. Beatrice d'Este, Duchess of Bari, was the daughter of Ercole I d'Este, Marquis of Ferrara, and a member of the esteemed House of Este. The image, titled "Lodovico il Moro e Beatrice d'Este," depicts the couple in the grandeur of their roles as rulers. Ludovico is shown in the traditional attire of a Milanese duke, wearing a red velvet robe adorned with ermine fur and a golden ducal coronet. Beatrice, in turn, wears the elegant and fashionable clothing of the time, with a richly embroidered gown and a headdress adorned with pearls and precious stones. Their two children, Massimiliano and Francois, are depicted in the attire of young nobles, dressed in rich velvet and silk, with fur-trimmed cloaks. In the background, we see the figures of Giovanni Castiglioni, Count of Barzanò, Bartolomeo Arese, and Giannantonio Castiglione, senators of Milan, adding to the grandeur and importance of the scene. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the Italian nobility during the late 15th century, providing a fascinating insight into historical fashion and the power dynamics of the time.
