EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolithograph depicts two exquisite members of the Mammillaria cactus family: Mammillaria prolifera and Mammillaria rhodantha, also known as Mamillaria pusilla and Mammillaria rhodantha respectively. The image is derived from an illustration by Desire Bois, published in Edward Step's "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse" in 1896 by Frederick Warne in London. Mammillaria prolifera, also known as the Rattail Cactus or Disocactus flagelliformis, is a small, trailing cactus with long, slender stems that resemble rats' tails. Its small, pink flowers appear in clusters at the ends of the stems. Mammillaria rhodantha, or the Red-flowered Mammillaria, is a globular cactus with distinctive pink-red flowers that emerge from its creases. The plant's small, spherical shape is covered in small, raised tubercles, giving it a textured appearance. Both of these cacti were popular in Victorian horticulture, and were often grown in greenhouses for their unique and intriguing appearances. The chromolithograph captures their beauty and intricacy in stunning detail, making it an attractive addition to any botanical collection. Desire Bois was a renowned botanical illustrator of the time, known for her precise and detailed illustrations of a wide range of plants. Her work was published in various botanical and horticultural publications, including Edward Step's "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse." This image of Mammillaria prolifera and Mammillaria rhodantha is a testament to her skill and dedication to accurately depicting the natural world.
