EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is an 1813 copperplate engraving of a man and woman of Norway, dressed in their traditional costumes. The illustration is taken from Leopold von Buch's "Travels Through Norway and Lapland," published in Milan as part of Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's "Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages (Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti)" between 1815 and 1817. The meticulously hand-colored engraving by Dell Acqua and Lazaretti showcases the authenticity and richness of Norwegian folk attire during that era. The man is depicted wearing a long, woolen tunic, known as a "bunad," adorned with intricate embroidery and silver ornaments. His waist is cinched with a wide, decorative belt, and he dons a tall, conical hat, called a "barekjøtt," which is typically worn during traditional celebrations. The woman's attire is equally impressive, consisting of a long, red, floor-length dress, called a "fjordbukk," which is also embellished with intricate embroidery and silver ornaments. She wears a white blouse underneath and a red apron, secured with a decorative brooch. Her headdress is a stunning, tall, pleated cap, known as a "kjøttkjeg," which is often adorned with flowers and ribbons. This stunning image provides a glimpse into the past, offering us a glimpse into the traditional clothing and customs of Norway during the early 19th century. It is a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and the enduring beauty of its folk traditions.
