EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and captivating hand-colored lithograph, Marie Françoise de Bourbon, Duchesse d'Orléans, is depicted in a formal portrait alongside Louise-Francoise Le Bouthillier de Chavigny. The image, taken from Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolio X 57, dates back to 1692, and was published in Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France" in 1852. Marie Françoise de Bourbon (1648-1719) was the wife of Philippe II, Regent of France, and the mother of the future King Louis XIV. She is shown here in a grand, ornate gown, adorned with intricate gold lace and embroidery, as well as a voluminous, ruffled collar. Her dark hair is styled in elaborate curls, and she gazes directly at the viewer with a confident and regal expression. Louise-Francoise Le Bouthillier de Chavigny (1649-1738), a widow of Philippe de Clerembault, is depicted on the right side of the image. She is dressed in a more subdued, yet still elegant, black gown, with a simple white collar and a delicate lace cuff. Her hair is styled in a more modest, yet still fashionable, updo. The two women are shown in a formal setting, with a richly decorated background and ornate furnishings. The use of hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making the details of their clothing and accessories stand out even more. Overall, this portrait captures the opulence and elegance of the French court during the late 17th century, and the strong, independent spirit of two remarkable women.
