EDITORS COMMENTS
Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor (1459-1519), also known as Maximilian I, Archduke of Austria, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France." Born in Austria in 1459, Maximilian ascended to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire in 1493, ruling until his death in 1519. This image captures Maximilian in the prime of his reign, dressed in the regal attire befitting an emperor. He wears a richly decorated robe, adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, and a tall, pointed imperial crown sits atop his head. A fur-trimmed mantle is draped over his shoulders, adding an air of grandeur and warmth to the image. Maximilian's expression is serious and determined, reflecting his strong leadership and military prowess. He is known for his extensive military campaigns, which helped to solidify his power and expand the Holy Roman Empire. This lithograph, created in 1852 by Paul Lacroix, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a detailed and accurate representation of the clothing and appearance of one of Europe's most powerful rulers. Maximilian I's legacy continues to be felt in European history, making this image a valuable and intriguing addition to any collection of historical art or costume.
