EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Meadow Saxifrage, Saxifraga granulata, a beautiful and common alpine plant native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The intricate illustration was created by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840) and published in Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, in Florence, Italy, in 1837. Turpin is celebrated for his exceptional botanical illustrations and is considered one of the greatest French botanical artists of the 19th century. The engraving shows the delicate white flowers of the Meadow Saxifrage, which bloom in clusters at the ends of the stems. The plant's small, round, and slightly hairy leaves are also depicted, as well as the seed pods that develop after the flowers have wilted. The plant is often compared to Milkweed, Asclepias syriaca, due to the similarity in the shape and arrangement of their leaves. However, Meadow Saxifrage is not related to Milkweed and belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. The Meadow Saxifrage has historically been used for medicinal purposes, particularly for treating digestive issues and as a diuretic. The plant's edible seeds and floss have also been used in vegetable dishes and as a source of fiber. This exquisite illustration not only showcases the beauty of the Meadow Saxifrage but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of botany and botanical illustration during the 19th century.
