EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, created by Joseph Strutt in 1876, depicts an exhilarating scene from the medieval era: a tilting game or quintain. The image captures the moment of intense focus and determination as a young boy, perched precariously on a rolling trestle, braces himself for the challenge ahead. Two other boys, dressed in period attire, pull the ropes attached to the trestle, propelling it forward at a steady pace. The boy on the trestle brandishes a long lance in his right hand, his left hand gripping the shaft for stability. His eyes are fixed on the quintain, a tall, fixed target, adorned with five shields and a wooden head, suspended at the top. The quintain's motion is activated by a hidden mechanism, making it a formidable opponent. Tilting games, also known as jousting or tournament games, were popular pastimes during the medieval period. They required skill, strength, and courage. The quintain was a common target used to hone the riders' lance-throwing abilities, preparing them for the more dangerous encounters in tournaments. This stunning illustration, taken from Strutt's comprehensive work 'Sports and Pastimes of the People of England,' offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of medieval sports and games. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring the scene to life, transporting us back in time to an era of chivalry and excitement.
