EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the Memorial Board for Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier to have fought in the trenches during the First World War, standing alongside his personal memorial by the Steenbeek stream in Ieper, Belgium, in 2016. The Memorial Board, which bore the inscription "The Last Fighting Tommy," was a tribute to Harry's service and sacrifice during the Great War, particularly the Battle of Passchendaele. Tragically, both the Memorial Board and Harry's personal memorial were damaged by motor vehicles, and have since been moved to a safer location. Harry Patch, who passed away in 2009 at the age of 111, paid for the Memorial Board himself as a way to honor the millions of soldiers who lost their lives during the war. The Board stood as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the British and Allied forces during the First World War, and attracted visitors from all over the world. The Steenbeek stream, which flows through the Ypres Salient in Belgium, was a significant site of fighting during the First World War, and is now a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of the conflict. The photograph captures the enduring legacy of Harry Patch and the sacrifices made by the soldiers who fought in the trenches during the First World War.
