EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Memorial to the Canadian 10th and 16th Battalions CEF, also known as Kitcheners Wood, located near the Belgian town of Ieper (Ypres) in Flanders, Belgium. The memorial stands as a poignant tribute to the brave Canadian soldiers who fought and lost their lives during the First World War, particularly during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. The Memorial, designed by Canadian architects E.J. Lennox and Sons, was unveiled on August 2, 1922, and is dedicated to the memory of the 1,659 soldiers of the 10th and 16th Battalions who were killed in action or died of wounds during the war. The central feature of the memorial is a large cross, flanked by two statues of Canadian soldiers in full military uniform, one standing and the other kneeling in prayer. The names of the fallen soldiers are inscribed on the walls surrounding the memorial. The photograph was taken in 2016, and the memorial continues to be a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike, who come to pay their respects to the Canadian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. The Memorial to the Canadian 10th and 16th Battalions CEF stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the Canadian soldiers who fought in the trenches of Flanders and beyond during the Great War. The memorial also serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between Canada and Belgium, forged through the shared history of the First World War.
