EDITORS COMMENTS
Memorial Chapel Calvarie in Dixmuide, Belgium: A Tribute to the Sacrifices of the Great War This evocative photograph captures the Memorial Chapel Calvarie in Dixmuide, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Great War. Dedicated to both soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during this devastating conflict, the chapel was solemnly blessed on September 23, 1928, in the presence of the Bishop of Bruges, the Duke and Duchess of Brabant, who would later become King Leopold III and Queen Astrid of the Belgians. The chapel, which once drew large pilgrimages, stands as a testament to the profound impact of World War I on the people of Belgium. Constructed in 1928, the Memorial Chapel Calvarie is situated in Dixmuide, a town in the western part of Belgium, near the historic city of Ypres, or Ieper, which was heavily damaged during the war. The chapel's design reflects the crucifixion of Christ, with the Calvarie hill serving as a symbolic representation of Mount Calvary. The site holds a significant historical and spiritual importance for the people of Belgium, as it stands as a reminder of the immense loss and suffering endured during the First World War. Despite its historical significance, the chapel has seen a decline in pilgrimages since the construction of the Ijzer Tower, another war memorial, which was built nearby. Nevertheless, the Memorial Chapel Calvarie continues to stand as a powerful symbol of remembrance and hope, inspiring reflection and gratitude for the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives during the Great War.
