EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created in 1890 by E.K. Mayers after an ornithological illustration by John James Audubon, showcases a Merlin (Falco columbarius 1) in a dynamic encounter with a Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus 2). The Merlin, a long-eared, short-winged falcon, is often referred to as the 'pigeon hawk' due to its preference for hunting pigeons and other small birds. In this scene, the Merlin appears to have successfully caught a duck (not depicted), while the Peregrine Falcon, the fastest bird in the world, looks on with keen interest. The Merlin's colorful plumage, with its rich brown back and rufous-tinged underparts, contrasts strikingly with the Peregrine Falcon's sleek, slate-gray body and distinctive black 'moustache' markings. Both birds are powerful predators, with the Merlin typically measuring around 12 inches in length and the Peregrine Falcon reaching up to 20 inches. The intricately detailed illustration also features two other birds of prey: a Pigeon Hawk or Great-footed Hawk (Buteo podiceps 1 and 2). These birds, with their broad wings and powerful talons, are often found in wooded areas and are known for their agility in the trees. The inclusion of these additional species highlights the rich diversity of bird life in Pennsylvania during the late 19th century, as documented by Benjamin Harry Warren in his comprehensive Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania. This evocative image, with its vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of North America during the 19th century.
