EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Regal Guard: The French Guardsman of the Garde-Francaise, 1789" This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France," offers a glimpse into the grandeur and intricacy of the French Guardsman's uniform during the revolutionary era. The Garde-Francaise, an elite infantry regiment of the French military, was established in 1572 and was known for its distinctive blue uniforms and bearskin hats. The image showcases a guardsman standing at attention, his musket slung over his shoulder, and a gleaming bearskin hat adorned with a plume resting atop his head. The uniform itself is a testament to the opulence of the French military during the late 18th century. The guard's coat is a rich, royal blue, with gold braid and buttons, while the lapels are trimmed with a velvet collar. The waistcoat and breeches are also of a darker shade of blue, with gold braid and buttons matching those on the coat. The guard's helmet, or "casque," is a striking contrast to the rest of the uniform. It is adorned with a golden sunburst and the fleur-de-lis, the emblems of the French monarchy. The guard's sash, or "ceinture," is draped over his left shoulder and secured with a golden eagle brooch. The guard's shoes are high-topped, with red soles and gold buckles. This lithograph, created in 1852 by Paul Lacroix, offers a fascinating look into the history of the French military and the intricate details of its uniforms. The Garde-Francaise, with its rich history and distinctive uniform, remains an iconic symbol of the French military tradition.
