EDITORS COMMENTS
Millicent Fawcett, a pioneering suffragist and early feminist, addresses a crowd of thousands in Hyde Park at the conclusion of the 1913 Pilgrimage March. Fawcett, co-founder of Newnham College, Cambridge, and president of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), was a leading figure in the campaign for women's right to vote. The Pilgrimage March, also known as the "March of the Women," was a mass demonstration organized by the NUWSS to showcase the growing support for women's suffrage. The event saw over 50,000 women and their supporters march from Bow, East London, to Hyde Park in London, carrying banners and wearing sashes in the colors of the suffrage movement. Fawcett's impassioned speech at the rally in Hyde Park marked the culmination of the Pilgrimage March and served as a powerful reminder of the determination and resolve of the suffragist movement. The struggle for women's suffrage would continue for several more years, but this pivotal moment in history marked a significant turning point in the fight for women's rights and paved the way for the eventual passage of the Representation of the People Act in 1918, which granted some women the right to vote in the United Kingdom.
