EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite chromolithograph depicts a mourning dove, Zenaida macroura, in a tender moment with its nest and egg. The image is based on an illustration by Edwin Sheppard, created for Thomas George Gentry's seminal work, "Nests and Eggs of the Birds of the United States," published by J.A. Wagenseller in Philadelphia in 1881. The mourning dove, also known as the eastern wood-pigeon or the rain pigeon, is a beloved bird species native to North America. The male and female mourning doves can be distinguished by their size and coloration. The male, with its iridescent green and purple sheen, is larger than the female, which has a more muted appearance. Both birds are shown here in their natural habitat, with the female carefully tending to her single egg in the nest. The mourning dove is known for its distinctive cooing sound and its mournful appearance, hence its name. The intricately detailed illustration captures the essence of the mourning dove's grace and beauty, as well as the delicate process of nesting and egg-laying. The use of chromolithography, a printing technique that involves the transfer of color from lithographic stones to paper, adds depth and vibrancy to the image. This print is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of ornithological illustration during the late 19th century.
