Amanita Bertuch Bilderbuch Educational Encyclopedia Friedrich Johann Kinder Lactarius Muscaria Mushroom Mycology Radiata Russula

EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, showcases an enticing array of mushroom varieties. The illustration includes seven distinct species: Russula integra (1, 2, 3), Lactarius torminosus (4, 5), Amanita muscaria (6), Coprinopsis radiata (7), and Lactarius piperatus (8). Mushrooms have long been a subject of fascination for natural historians and children alike. This exquisite illustration serves as an educational tool, showcasing the unique characteristics of each species. The Russula integra, with its cap adorned with white warts and red-brown pores, is a common find in Europe's deciduous forests. The Lactarius torminosus, also known as the Milky Tawnycap, boasts a bright orange cap and a milky latex that stains blue when bruised. Amanita muscaria, the iconic Fly Agaric, is easily recognizable by its bright red cap with white spots and a volva at the base. Coprinopsis radiata, or the Ink Cap, is known for its distinctive blackening cap when exposed to moisture. Lastly, Lactarius piperatus, or the Peppery Milkcap, features a yellowish-brown cap with a white veil and a milky latex that imparts a peppery taste. As children turned the pages of this picture book, they were introduced to the wonders of mycology – the study of mushrooms and other fungi. This illustration not only served to educate but also to spark the imagination, inviting young minds to explore the natural world around them.
