EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Andrea Bernieri for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1847, showcases a diverse array of musical instruments used by the ancient Hebrews. The image transports us back in time to an idyllic scene of Hebrew musicians playing their instruments with great passion and skill. At the center, a woman strums a harp with an expression of deep concentration, while a man plays a lyre with a serene expression. A flute player, perhaps a child, joins in, adding a melodic layer to the music. To the right, a man blows into a horn, its resonant sound carrying through the air. A psaltery, an organ, and various percussion instruments, including a drum, a triangle, and a rattle, are also depicted. The scene is further enriched by the presence of other elements typical of ancient Hebrew life. Women and children are bathing in public baths, surrounded by basins, spigots, and wash fountains. Some women are nursing their babies, while others are adorned with sandals and intricate headdresses. The inclusion of these everyday activities adds a sense of authenticity to the image. This engraving not only provides a glimpse into the musical traditions of the ancient Hebrews but also offers a fascinating insight into their daily life and culture. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors of the hand-colored engraving make it a stunning historical and artistic treasure.
