EDITORS COMMENTS
Muttonwood, Turpinia occidentalis, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali" or "Dictionary of Natural Science," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Stanghi, with direction from the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpinia occidentalis, also known as Turpinia paniculata, Turpinia pannocchiuta, or Blue Madder, is a shrub native to Central and South America. Its common name, Muttonwood, is derived from the resemblance of its leaves to mutton fat. The plant is edible and its leaves and fruits have been used in traditional medicine for various ailments. The engraving shows the plant in its natural habitat, growing in a field. The intricate details of the leaves, flowers, and fruits are beautifully rendered in the stipple technique, which involves using small dots to create shading and texture. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, highlighting the rich blues and greens of the plant. This illustration is a testament to the skill and artistry of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, who is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's work was influential in the field of botany, contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge and the documentation of plant species. The Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a groundbreaking work, featuring over 1,500 plates and covering a wide range of natural sciences, including botany, zoology, mineralogy, and geology. The publication of the Dizionario marked a significant milestone in the history of scientific illustration and remains an important resource for researchers and scholars today.
