EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Narval, Plesionika narvalis, Nebalia herbstii, Mysis oculata, Palemon pristis, Rostro del Palemo, Rostri del Palemone variabile, Nebalia d'Herbst, Misi del Fabricio," is a stunning representation of various types of shrimp and crustaceans, as depicted in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali" or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The image showcases several species of shrimp, including the Narval shrimp (Plesionika narvalis), Leptostracan shrimp (Nebalia herbstii), and Mysid shrimp (Mysis oculata). Also illustrated are various porcelain crabs (Palemon pristis, Rostro del Palemo, Rostri del Palemone variabile), as well as other crustaceans such as the Eryon, Cuvieri, Larga, Chela, Erio, and Di Cuvier. The Narval shrimp, with its distinctive long snout, is a large, extinct species of shrimp that was once abundant in the Mediterranean Sea. The Leptostracan shrimp, a fossil crustacean, is characterized by its elongated body and bivalve-like carapace. The Mysid shrimp, still found in various aquatic environments today, is a small, planktonic crustacean with a transparent body and multiple legs. Turpin, who is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, expertly captured the intricate details of these marine creatures, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of over 180 years ago.
