EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Natives of the Baie de Langle, Sakhalin Island," is an exquisite copperplate engraving hand-colored by Lazaretti from Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's "Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti" (Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages), published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. The illustration is by Gaspard Duche de Vancy, based on Jean-Francois La Perouse's historic voyage. The scene portrays several native men from Sakhalin Island, located off the eastern coast of Russia, gathered around a fire in the lush, forested landscape of Baie de Langle. Their traditional attire, consisting of fur clothing and intricately designed headdresses, reflects their connection to the land and their indigenous culture. Among the natives, there is a Manchu Tartar, easily distinguishable by his unique headwear and clothing, which reflects the influence of the Manchu Empire on the region. The Manchus ruled China from 1644 to 1912, and their empire extended into parts of Siberia and the Russian Far East, including Sakhalin Island. This enchanting image offers a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous peoples of Sakhalin Island during the early 19th century. The intricate details of the engraving, combined with the vibrant hand-coloring, make it a stunning work of art and an invaluable historical record.
