EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the US Navy submarine Nautilus is seen departing from the Philadelphia Navy Yard on March 27, 1931, en route to New York City. The Nautilus, a submarine of the S-class, was the first submarine to be commissioned into the United States Navy with the hull number S-42. This image captures a significant moment in American naval history as the submarine sets sail on its journey, marking the beginning of its service in the US Navy fleet. The Nautilus was built by the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut, and was launched on February 23, 1930. After undergoing extensive trials and training, the submarine was commissioned on March 1, 1931, and was initially based out of the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The photograph shows the Nautilus leaving the Philadelphia Navy Yard, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the busy waterfront. The submarine's distinctive shape and sleek design are on full display as it cuts through the water, leaving a wake behind it. The image also captures the industrial backdrop of the navy yard, with cranes and other structures in the background. The Nautilus's voyage to New York City marked the beginning of its operational career in the US Navy. It would go on to serve during World War II, where it played a crucial role in the Atlantic Ocean, sinking several enemy ships. The submarine was ultimately decommissioned in 1946 and was later sold for scrap in 1959. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the history of the US Navy and the role of submarines in American military history. The image is part of The John Barrett Collection, held by Mary Evans Picture Library, and provides a valuable record of an important moment in the annals of naval history.
