This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the North American River Otter, Lontra canadensis, also known as the Canadian Otter. The image, created by Harriet or Edward Griffith and based on an illustration by Charles Hamilton Smith, was published as part of Baron Cuvier's seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom," in London in 1825 by Whittaker. The North American River Otter is a highly adaptable and agile semi-aquatic mammal native to North America. They are characterized by their sleek, streamlined bodies, short-legged hindquarters, and webbed hind feet, which enable them to swim efficiently in both fresh and saltwater. Their dense, waterproof fur, typically brown or dark brown with lighter underbellies, provides insulation and protection against the cold. River otters are omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of prey, including fish, crustaceans, mollusks, amphibians, and even muskrats. They are also known to eat fruits, nuts, and plants. These otters are social animals, living in groups called rafts, which can include up to 15 individuals. They communicate through vocalizations, body language, and scent marking. The North American River Otter population declined significantly due to habitat loss, hunting, and pollution. However, conservation efforts have helped to stabilize their numbers, and they are now listed as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
