EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts a Northern Bobwhite quail family in their natural habitat. The male quail, identified by its distinctive black and white plumage and bobbing head, stands proudly in the foreground. Two female quails, with their speckled brown and gray feathers, flank the male, while a young quail, with its spotted feathers, peeks out from behind one of the females. In the background, a male harrier hawk, with its distinctive crested head and rufous plumage, hungrily eyes the quails as potential prey. The intricate details of the quails' feathers and the harrier's sharp talons are beautifully rendered in this ornithological illustration. This print is a chromolithograph after an original work by John James Audubon, created for Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, published in Harrisburg in 1890. The 19th century illustration showcases the vibrant colors and lifelike qualities that have made Audubon's work a beloved and enduring record of American wildlife.
