EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Northern Leopard Frog, Lithobates pipiens, also known as the Peeping Frog or Rana pipiens. The image is taken from Dr. George Shaw's seminal work, "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801. Shaw was a renowned English naturalist and surgeon, and his meticulously detailed illustrations were considered the standard reference for herpetology during the early 19th century. The Northern Leopard Frog is a native of North America, primarily found in the eastern and central United States and southern Canada. This amphibian is easily recognizable by its distinctive, irregularly shaped, dark spots on its greenish-brown or olive-green back, which resemble the leopard's spots, hence its name. The frog's underbelly is white or yellow, with black spots. This engraving captures the Northern Leopard Frog in a naturalistic pose, perched on a lily pad in a serene pond. Its large, expressive eyes are wide open, giving it an alert and curious appearance. The intricate details of the frog's skin texture, the ripples on the water's surface, and the delicate veins on the lily pad are all beautifully rendered, making this a true masterpiece of 19th-century natural history illustration.
