EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, titled "Poulpe commun, Pourpre" (Common Octopus, Purple), depicts two fascinating marine creatures: the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and the purple textile or common murex snail (Dicathais orbita). The image, created by the skilled hands of Adolph Fries and expertly rendered in engraving by du Casse, is taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) by Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville, published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The common octopus, shown in the left half of the image, is the most common octopus species found in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Known for its intelligence and agility, this cephalopod boasts a soft body, eight arms, and three hearts. Its coloration ranges from reddish-brown to gray, with the ability to change its skin color and texture for camouflage. In the right half of the engraving, the purple textile or common murex snail is depicted. This gastropod species is known for its beautiful, iridescent purple shell, which was once highly valued for producing the Tyrian purple dye. The snail's body is white, and it possesses a long, probing tongue called a radula, which it uses to scrape algae from rocks. The intricate details of this engraving showcase the beauty and diversity of these marine creatures, capturing the fascination and wonder that natural history inspires. The delicate hand-coloring adds an additional layer of depth and richness to the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection or study of marine life.
