Old Summer Palace of Yuen Ming Yuan (Yuanming Yuan), Haidian, Peking, Qing Dynasty: A Handcoloured Copperplate Engraving by Andrea Freschi after Antoine Cardon This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Old Summer Palace of Yuanming Yuan, located in the Haidian district of Beijing, during the Qing Dynasty. The palace, also known as the "Garden of Perfect Brightness," was originally built in 1703 for Emperor Kangxi as a retreat from the Forbidden City. The Old Summer Palace served as a recreational and cultural center for the imperial family, featuring numerous gardens, pavilions, temples, and lakes. The image, created by Andrea Freschi after Antoine Cardon, is taken from the renowned work "China, Its Costumes, Arts, Manufactures, etc." published by Henri-Leonard-Jean-Baptiste Bertin and Jean Baptiste Joseph Breton in London in 1824. The meticulous detail in the engraving showcases the grandeur and beauty of the Old Summer Palace, with its intricate architecture, lush gardens, and serene lake. The vibrant handcolours add depth and richness to the image, transporting the viewer back in time to experience the splendor of this historic site. The Old Summer Palace was unfortunately destroyed during the Second Opium War in 1860, leaving only ruins of its former glory. Today, the area is being restored, and visitors can still appreciate the remnants of this once magnificent palace and its stunning gardens. This engraving serves as a testament to the enduring allure of Yuanming Yuan and the cultural treasures of China's imperial past.
