EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" or "Picture Book for Children," published in Weimar in 1802. The illustration showcases two species of hawk-moths, the Oleander hawk-moth (Daphnis nerii) and the Spurge hawk-moth (Hyles euphorbiae), along with their respective caterpillars and host plants. The Oleander hawk-moth can be seen in the foreground, with its adult form perched gracefully on an oleander flower (Nerium oleander). The caterpillar of this species, not depicted here, is characterized by its striking black and red stripes and spines. The Oleander hawk-moth is known for its long proboscis, which it uses to feed on the nectar of flowers. In the background, the Spurge hawk-moth is shown in its caterpillar stage, feeding on the leaves of a leafy spurge plant (Euphorbia esula). The adult Spurge hawk-moth, not illustrated here, is characterized by its large size and distinctive white markings. The caterpillar of this species is covered in tiny, white, waxy tubercles that provide it with protection against predators. These hawk-moths are important pollinators and play a crucial role in the ecosystem. The intricate details of this engraving not only showcase their beauty but also highlight the importance of their relationship with their host plants. This illustration is a testament to the natural history knowledge of the time and the artistic skill of the engraver.
