EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Olive Bushshrike, Chlorophoneus olivaceus, also known as the Large Grey-headed Bushshrike or the Olive Lanius. The image is taken from William John Swainson's seminal work, "Birds of Western Africa," published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology, in Edinburgh in 1837. Swainson's meticulous illustration of this enchanting bird was later translated into a beautiful steel engraving by William Lizars. The Olive Bushshrike is a medium-sized, striking bird with a distinctive olive-grey head and black back, making it a captivating addition to any African avian collection. Its scientific name, Chlorophoneus olivaceus, derives from the Greek words "chloros," meaning green or yellow, and "phoneus," meaning voice, reflecting its greenish-yellow underparts and melodic song. The Olive Bushshrike is a resident bird of West and Central Africa, preferring to inhabit wooded savannas and forest edges. These birds are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. They are known for their distinctive call, which is a loud, clear "puff" sound, earning them alternative common names such as the Olive Puffback and the Dryoscopus Puff. This stunning hand-colored steel engraving not only showcases the Olive Bushshrike's striking appearance but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating bird. Swainson's illustration and Lizars' engraving remain important contributions to the field of ornithology, offering a window into the rich biodiversity of Africa over 180 years ago.
