EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving is a beautiful representation of Paepalanthus dendroides, also known as Joncinelle dendroide. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Paepalanthus dendroides is a small, evergreen plant native to South America, characterized by its slender stems and bright green, ovate leaves. The plant is in bloom in this illustration, showcasing its delicate, tubular flowers that hang in clusters from the stem. The vibrant colors of the flowers, ranging from pink to red, are beautifully rendered in the hand-coloring. The illustration also features a crane and a bird perched on a nearby plant, adding an element of natural beauty and wonder to the scene. The presence of the birds is a common motif in botanical illustrations of the time, as they were often used to provide a sense of scale and to highlight the relationship between plants and the natural world. The illustration also includes other plants in the background, including what appears to be a Strelitzia reginae, or bird of paradise, adding to the overall richness and diversity of the scene. The intricate detail and precise shading of the stipple engraving technique bring the various elements of the illustration to life, making it a true masterpiece of botanical art.
