EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite copperplate engraving, hand-colored by Lazaretti, is an illustration of the Pampas Fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus) and the Spiny Rat (Proechimys guairae), two fascinating species native to South America, as depicted in Felix de Azara's "Voyages dans l'Amérique Méridionale" (Journeys in Southern America), published in Milan in 1815. The Pampas Fox, also known as the Patagonian Fox or Aguarachay, is a canid native to the grasslands of South America. It is the largest of the South American foxes, with a body length of up to 1.1 meters and a bushy tail that can reach the same length. Its coat is predominantly grayish-brown, with a white underbelly and black-tipped ears. This fox is an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on a variety of prey, including rodents, birds, and carrion, as well as fruits and vegetables. The Spiny Rat, or Casiragua, is a rodent species that is endemic to the grasslands of Argentina and Uruguay. It is characterized by its long, spiny quills that cover its body, providing it with protection against predators. The quills are particularly prominent along the animal's back and flanks. The Casiragua is a herbivore, feeding primarily on grasses and other vegetation. This stunning illustration, produced by Dell Acqua and hand-colored by Lazaretti, offers a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating species and the rich biodiversity of South America during the early 19th century. The intricate detail and vibrant colors bring the Pampas Fox and Spiny Rat to life, providing a window into a world that is both beautiful and intriguing.
