EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts Para rhatany and Peruvian rhatany, two varieties of Krameria lappacea, also known as Rhatania para and Rhatania peruviana, or Ratanhia, Mapato, and Pumacuchu in traditional medicine. The botanical illustration was created by David Blair and published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in 1880. The intricate details of the plant's leaves, stems, and roots are beautifully rendered in this exquisite work of art. Krameria lappacea is a small shrub native to South America, with bright red or yellow roots that have been used traditionally for medicinal purposes for centuries. The Para rhatany, or Rhatania para, is native to the Amazon Basin, while the Peruvian rhatany, or Rhatania peruviana, is found in the Andes Mountains. Both varieties have been used in traditional medicine to treat a wide range of ailments, including fever, diarrhea, dysentery, and wounds. The roots of Krameria lappacea contain several active compounds, including quinoline alkaloids and tannins, which have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent properties. The plant was also used as a dye and a source of red pigment. This botanical illustration provides a valuable record of the plant's appearance and offers insight into the traditional uses and medicinal properties of Para rhatany and Peruvian rhatany. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the lithograph make it a beautiful addition to any collection of botanical art or natural history.
