EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored lithograph depicts a French People's Representative of the Directory Era, an important political figure during the French Revolution. The representative is shown wearing the distinctive attire of the time, including a bicorn hat adorned with tricolor plumes, a tricolor sash belt, boots, and a white shirt with a cravat. The bicorn hat, a symbol of the French Revolution, is a tall, conical hat with a wide brim that was worn at a rakish angle. The tricolor plumes represent the French Revolution's national colors - blue, white, and red. The tricolor sash belt was also a symbol of the Revolution, and was worn by all members of the National Assembly. The representative's boots are simple and practical, reflecting the practicality and simplicity of the revolutionary era. This image is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. The meticulous attention to detail in the hand-coloring of the lithograph brings the image to life, transporting us back to the revolutionary era and offering a glimpse into the fashion and politics of the time.
