EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts Philippe, Comte de la Mothe-Houdancourt, Duke of Cardona, a prominent French military and political figure during the 17th century. Born in 1605, he rose to prominence under the reign of King Louis XIII and later served as Marshal of France under Louis XIV. The portrait, originally painted by Jean Valdor, is taken from the "Costumes Historiques de la France" publication by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix. The meticulous handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing out the intricate details of the Duke's attire. Philippe is depicted in the regalia of the Duke of Cardona, a title he held in the Kingdom of Naples. He wears a richly decorated doublet, adorned with gold lace and embroidery, over a shirt with ruff collar. A sash with the Cardona coat of arms is draped over his left shoulder, and a sword hangs at his side. His hair is styled in the fashionable long curls of the period, and his expression is serious and resolute. The Duke of Cardona's military career was marked by several significant victories, including the Battle of the Somme in 1636 and the Battle of Lens in 1648. He also played a key role in the political intrigues of the French court, and was a patron of the arts and letters. This portrait captures the essence of a man of power and distinction, a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the French aristocracy during the Age of Absolutism.
